Dennis M. Traynor
May 26, 1949 - December 7, 2011
It is rare in life to have a true friend, one that genuinely cares about you. Someone who pops in at work for a sanity check at the most needed times. Who listens and gives the best advice, even if it is the harder way. Or asks for advice or shares the game plan. A person who encourages you when you are down, and laughs with you at the joyful moments. Who will call you out of the blue to play hooky and go out on the boat, just because.
Being more than a friend, being a mentor in my faith journey, and mostly by example. Challenging me to stretch and grow in faith, and teaching me how to be a good shepherd. Making all that needs to be done in Christ’s name seem simple and easy. Bringing clarity to it all when it’s foggy, and light when it is dark. Showing us all how to really love our Lord and being Christ centered always.
There are so many times that Dennis brought our Lord into our moments. Like looking up at a beautiful sunrise with clouds aglow and commenting in his animated joy-filled way, “Nice job God!” Or when working in ministry to have him call and say “Tones, Dennis Traynor here, calling with a sanity check.” Or when he forgot something he needed to do, would apologize and excuse it to “mad cow disease.” But most of all, what I will most remember him for, is simply for saying, “I love you.” And I love you too.
My dear brother in Christ, I know you are looking down and excitedly saying “I made it, I’m home.” And for me, it is much too soon. But I know God has great plans in your wake, because He worked mightily through you. This world is a much better place because of that. You epitomized what we worked hard together to do, to make a friend, be a friend and bring your friend to Christ. You spoke often about what we are going to say the day we stand at the gates when asked “What’s up?” I know you are hearing instead “Welcome my good and faithful servant, all your friends await you.”
